This month, we are delighted to introduce Kingsley Ibeabuchi who comes from Nigeria. He was part of emPLANT Intake 3 (2020-2022).
He studied at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Sweden during his first academic year and at Ege University in Turkey during his second academic year.
🌱 From emPLANT to Cutting-Edge Research in Plant Genetics
My current role combines research, industry collaboration, and international experience. I am a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks Fellow, funded by the EU, and a PhD candidate in the Division of Crop Plant Genetics at the University of Göttingen, Germany. I have also gained practical experience working at Deutsche Saatveredelung AG (DSV), a plant breeding company in Germany. This position has also given me the opportunity to carry out part of my research in Ireland on secondment, further expanding my scientific horizons. My work focuses on understanding how seed priming treatments enhance seed and seedling vigour at the genetic level in Brassica napus under both optimal and drought conditions. By combining seed treatments, GWAS, field trials, and transcriptomic analyses, I aim to uncover key genes and molecular pathways that can be used to improve crop resilience. Since graduating from emPLANT, my path has evolved from learning fundamental concepts in plant breeding and molecular biology to actively applying them in real research settings and contributing to scientific advancement.
🔬 A Transformative Learning Experience
My time in the emPLANT programme was truly transformative. It gave me more than knowledge, it gave me perspective. I was immersed in a rich, multidisciplinary environment where plant breeding, genetics, and biotechnology came together in a meaningful way. I learned not only how to understand complex biological systems, but also how to question them and apply that understanding in practical contexts. The international nature of the programme pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to collaborate across cultures and scientific disciplines. I found myself gaining confidence, independence, and a strong sense of direction. Today, I draw on those experiences every day as I integrate fieldwork with advanced molecular tools to tackle pressing issues in crop improvement.
🌍 A Global Community with Lasting Impact
Being part of the emPLANT alumni community feels like belonging to a living, evolving network of passionate scientists. I see it as a source of inspiration and connection that continues to shape my journey. It reminds me that I am not working in isolation, but as part of a global effort to advance plant science and ensure food security in a changing world. I value the exchange of ideas, the shared experiences, and the sense of purpose that comes with being part of this community. For me, it is both a professional anchor and a personal motivation to keep growing, contributing, and striving toward meaningful impact.
✨ Fun Facts
✨ I’ve always been fascinated by astronomy and astrophysics. There’s something about staring up at the night sky and picking out constellations, planets, and distant stars that just thrills me every time.
🌍 Before starting my emPLANT journey, I had never left Nigeria. Since then, I have travelled and lived in more than 10 countries across Europe, experiencing countless cultures and landscapes, and it has truly been a dream come true.
