Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences - MATE

The founding of new Szent István University, one of the largest agricultural-focused, multidisciplinary higher education institutions in Europe, was established on 1 August 2020. Szent István University became the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) in February 2021. The newly established institution, formed by the former Szent István University, Kaposvár University, Georgikon Faculty of University of Pannonia and Gyöngyös Campus of Eszterházy Károly University, is set as a goal to become the flagship of Hungarian agricultural education.

This commitment dovetails nicely with the opportunities, the past and present of Hungarian agriculture. Our goal is to provide world-class education that helps young graduates to build a motivating career and ensures a decent standard of living, which contributes to the governance of the renown Hungarian agriculture.

The backbone of the new university infrastructure is provided by our prominent campuses, where our professional teaching staff and a unique green environment make the students feel welcome. Buda, Gödöllő, Gyöngyös, Kaposvár and Keszthely Campuses offer constantly renewed degree and training programmes and make significant investments in order to strengthen their ties to international higher education and to meet the technological challenges of the 21st century.
We are committed to build up an institution where our students can acquire complex and market-oriented knowledge which is competitive anywhere in the world.

The primary task of the University is to provide multilevel, multilingual, student-centred education that is in harmony with scientific progress and prevailing societal requirements.
Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) offers its students scientific advancement and professional opportunities on their career path, while offering highly elaborated, new generation training programmes to its excellent students most committed to sciences. MATE seeks to broaden and popularise agricultural career options as its primary mission.

The integrated university with greater autonomy and a renewable funding system has countless benefits for researchers and students in all disciplines, and it maintains its traditions, strengths and training locations while developing continuously.
With the renewal of the complete Hungarian agricultural education and the strengthening of international relations, our long-term objective is to make Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences one of the thirty best agricultural higher education universities in the world.

PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY AT MATE

Plant biotechnology MSc training was started in 1992 at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, MATE – former SZIU, in the frame of general agricultural education. Realizing that the successful agricultural researches and production should have strong genomic bases a new MSc specialization was established in 2006 both in Hungarian and English language. The first plant biotechnologists were graduated in 2010. Since then 145 Hungarian ad 76 international students got diploma after completing their studies.

In addition to the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, they had the chance to conduct experiments is various areas such as functional genomic analysis, molecular plant breeding, development and application of moleciular markers, molecular taxonomy, methods and techniques of in vitro breeding.

In these activities Institute of Genetics, Micobiology  and Biotechnology collaborates with the important research intitutes and companies in Hungary: e.g. National Agricultural Research Institute, Martonvásár Agricultural Research Institute, cereal research institute in Szeged, Institute of Vitivulture and Enology in Pécs University, Syngenta Ltd., Ócsa.

MASTER PROGRAM IN AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

The rapid development of molecular biological sciences requires the training of specialists who are able to transform these achievements into practically useful technologies and products in everyday agricultural and horticultural practice. They will be able to provide the required amount of quality food for the world’s growing population. In addition, the graduates will have the know-how to develop new plant products (e.g. functional foods, pharmacologically active substances).

It is a full-time programme and lasts for 4 semesters. In the first semesters students acquire theoretical knowledge (molecular biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, plant physiology and microbiology) and a thorough training in basic laboratory techniques. In the last three semesters they prepare their thesis, i.e. on individual scientific work. This is accompanied by introducing the students to the latest developments in specialized fields of applied agricultural biotechnology.

MSc graduates will be able to work in agricultural research, in agricultural administrative or executive positions, or as specialists in a variety of agricultural production technologies (e.g. quality control, the seed industry, development and controlling of micropropagation and ’GMO’ technologies).
